For Reading School to have a successful careers department, it requires a wide variety of contacts and resources. As a committee, our role is to pull together support from local business and, more importantly, our parents. Reading School affords a comprehensive career's education structure. Below is an overview of the events we coordinate and how we could benefit from your support!
For dates and times of forthcoming events, please see the Events page.
Annual Careers Convention
Year 9 to Year 13
Boys from Year 9 and upward and parents and guardians are invited to attend the convention, a joint venture between Reading School and the Education and Careers Committee. Various guests attend, many of whom are our own parents including members of the armed forces, journalists, engineers, IT specialists, vets, doctors, lawyers, media, local government officers and many more. Lectures are also provided to ensure your son can make realistic and appropriate subject and career choices.
The convention has moved from May to November due to the change in time for GCSE option selection for Year 9 students.
Further information regarding the event will be made available in the Autumn term.
Mock Interviews for University
October – December
On average 70 university mock interviews are conducted each year to provide support to university candidates including those applying for Oxbridge. We continually look for support from academics, lecturers or those involved in higher education or university life to support with this valuable service. We provide mock interviews for any student who requires one, so any of you with experience in this field would be extremely welcome.
University Admissions Procedure
Our UCAS talk held in February aims to provide you with the necessary knowledge to guide your son through the University Admissions Procedure.
Suitable work experience placements are sought by the boys either at home or abroad. Sometimes this is not always possible without support so we would welcome local businesses to sponsor a boy. It is worth emphasising that the boys are 16 to 17 years of age which helps reduces the burden of administration on companies.
'Industry week' invites representatives from local businesses and industry to talk to the boys on their chosen subjects. Students also go out into industry as well so opportunities to visit work places would be most welcome and for companies to sponsor this event would be truly beneficial
Challenge of Management
A two day event hosted by the Holt School in Wokingham to introduce 6th form students to the every day thrills and dilemmas of the modern world of work!
Advisors, facilitators and the support of local businesses are critical to the success of this conference due to huge numbers of students involved. We welcome hearing from you or if you personally are interested or have staff who can offer support. In turn they will gain personal sense of achievement & develop their facilitation skills.
Careers and Education Committee
We are always grateful of support from our parents to join the careers committee. It is nothing too onerous, just 3 meetings a year and even if it is just contributing ideas and initiatives or meeting and greeting at our careers convention then you would be most welcome.
